Cochlear implants are an electronic device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear by bypassing the damaged hair cells of the cochlea to send signals to the brain. The implantation consists of a microphone, a speech processor, a transmitter and receiver and an electrode array. Both children and adults who are either deaf or severly hard of hearing can get these implants.

You need a cochlear implant if you -

  • Have moderate or severe hearing loss in both ears
  • Receive no or little benefit from hearing aids out there
  • Have scored 50% or less in the sentence recognition test conducted by ear specialist
There are a number of benefits of cochlear implantation to people with hearing disability. They become more confident in social situations. They are able to speak at normal hearing level and can communicate in a much better way. People can start to enjoy the world of new sounds.

Since cochlear implantation is done by surgery, the surgeons and specialists will weight all pros and cons and consult with you if you should go for the implantation. The person will be required to undergo therapy to be able to understand the various sounds that emerge after the implantation.
